Students are the Future in Climate Change Conferece: Portage la Prairie

The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) will bring its annual Generating Momentum for Our World: Justice in a Changing Climate Conference to Portage la Prairie today, January 29, 2015. Seventy-six students from six schools in the Portage la Prairie School Division will be attending a one-day conference at the PCU Centre to explore issues around social justice in our world.
Students will explore the concepts of climate change and social justice. They will investigate how climate change is altering the lives of people around the world, why this is a social justice issue, and what they can do to help ensure a healthy and sustainable future for people around the world. Through a series of simulation games, circuit sessions and workshops, students will discover answers to important questions such as: What is climate change? How will our lives be different in the future? How will climate change alter quality of life around the world? What can we do to take action for a more sustainable future?
Middle years students from North Memorial, La Verendrye, Fort la Reine, Arthur Meighen, Yellowquill, and Oakville schools will be attending the conference. The Portage la Prairie conference is the second in a series of four that are being held throughout Manitoba this year, from January to March. These conferences are made possible through financial support MCIC receives from the Government of Canada provided through Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD).

The morning session will include an opening plenary, public speaking, and leadership skill development. In the afternoon, students will participate in a session on how to take action and creative workshops.

Since 2002, the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) has hosted a number of successful conferences on international development issues for both middle years and high school students. The purpose of these conferences is to engage students in discussion of global issues, and help them move through the stages of planning an activity and then organizing it in their school or communities. Generating Momentum for Our World is an exciting opportunity for young people to learn about an issue, build leadership skills, take positive action, and have fun doing it! (read more)

Students Are The Future In Climate Change Conference

JANUARY 21, 2015, WINNIPEG, MANITOBA: The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) will bring its annual Generating Momentum for Our World: Justice in a Changing Climate Conference to Winnipeg today, January 21, 2015. Fifty-five students from nine schools in the Louis Riel, River East Transcona, and Lord Selkirk school divisions will be attending a one-day conference at the Glenwood Community Centre to explore issues around poverty reduction in our world.
Students will explore the concepts of climate change and social justice. They will investigate how climate change is altering the lives of people around the world, why this is a social justice issue, and what they can do to help ensure a healthy and sustainable future for people around the world. Through a series of simulation games, circuit sessions and workshops, students will discover answers to important questions such as: What is climate change? Maples Students’ Work in Kenya Celebrated for International Development Week 2014

Winnipeg, MB – To celebrate International Development Week 2014, the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) has created a video profile to celebrate the international work of students from Maples Collegiate.
International Development Week (IDW) runs from February 2-8, 2014. The theme for this year is We Are Making A Difference. IDW is an opportunity to explore how Canada and Manitobans are making a difference in our world. MCIC has produced eight video profiles of groups of Manitobans who are contributing their time and effort in the areas of international development and social justice issues to make a difference in our world.
