Did you know that it takes 690 stitches to make a standard Size 5 FIFA soccer ball? This is very intricate work, so often it is done by children sometimes as young as 4 years old. However, there are now fair trade sports balls that are made by workers in cooperatives who have been paid a fair living wage, have access to clean drinking water & facilities with proper ventilation, and who are NOT child labourers.
Education has been declared a Universal Human Right and one of the Rights of the Child by the United Nations. It is for this reason that it’s imperative to examine, not only the importance of education, but to ask questions about why some children in the Global South don’t get to go to school, and what role gender plays in determining whose rights are denied.
